Good Things to Know.

The Bible...

contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers.
Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.
Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

Christ is its grand subject, our good the design and the glory of God its end.

It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet.
Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully.
It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.
It is given you in life. will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever.
It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

⁴“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; ⁵you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
⁶but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Cardinal rule of Christian conduct

Great Stewards

A Steward is a person who manages something that belongs to someone else. We are all managers accountable to God, because everything we are and have belongs to God. Listen to the psalmist:

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it"

A steward nurtures and protects God's creation- land, water, air, animals, people and material things. A steward also uses, divides, and distributes food, money and other tangible resources.
God has always expected people to act as His managers.

Some of the people we read about in the Bible were ideal stewards or performed ideal acts of stewardship we would do well to imitate.

Jesus

Jesus was the model steward. He lived His life in perfect obedience to God the Father. Even as a boy, Jesus recognized that God had committed to Him a trust for which He was accountable. Not only was He the perfect steward, He performed the ultimate act of stewardship. "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that though he was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich" 2 Cor. 8:9

Abraham

Long before Jesus was born, Abraham was modeling good stewardship. We're introduced to Abraham, first called Abram, in Genesis 12. He's presented as a sensitive steward. Because he gave a tithe of goods captured in the battle to Melchizedek, he's associated with the practice of tithing which preceded the Mosaic law by at least 400 years (Gen 14). The offering to the king of Salem, priest of the most high God, was one way of showing his gratitude to God. In this experience and in many other ways, Abraham was a faithful manager of the things God provided.

David

The Psalms, of David reveal that he was very conscious of God's ownership of all creation, including people. In fact, Psalm 24 is one of the clearest statements in the Bible on God's ownership and our accountability to Him. In Psalm 96, the earth is called upon to worship God; Psalm 118 is a song of God's goodness. David is an excellent example of an imperfect human who developed a consuming sense of God's sovereignty and of his own stewardship responsibility to God.
